Wankel Engine |
Otosan Design and Development Department employed many talented engineers, such as Claude (Klod) Nahum, who lead the group which developed a Wankel engine that could produce 107 bhp (75 kW/101 PS) despite its small size. ..."Claude Nahum, Dr. Kemal Atesmen, Mithat Kuleli, Attila Salepcioglu, Ahmet Ulgen and Erol Batur, they all moved to a villa in Levent Istanbul. Otosan didn’t want those studies to be done within the factory. Wankel engine researches have been done in that house and tested on Anadol cars. Computers being very rare at that period, all calculations, studies and researches have been realized at the “punch cards” computers of Bosphorus University in Istanbul and Bagkur in Ankara. Patent rights have been issued. A secretary and an office boy were working together with the above 6 engineers. 5 Wankel engines have been produced in total. Anadol Kent engines having 48-54 HP, Anadol with Wankel engine had 107 HP. Everyday, road tests of the engine were done between Levent-Sariyer (a non-residential area at that period). But due to its high development costs and the well-known problematic character of Wankel engines, this engine was not used in Anadol's models. Another reason was the unsuccessful negotiations regarding the undertaking the shares of the Wankel Company by Ford Motor Company. After those negotiations, Otosan has also ceased the studies on Wankel engine. Today, one of these Wankel engines is displayed in Rahmi M. Koc Museum in Istanbul and another one in a private museum in Geneva Switzerland.
