A2 SL

A2 was not only the first 4-door car of Turkey but was olso the first 4-door fiber glass body sedan car of the world. The first studies for A2 started in 1969, developed in 1970 and manufactured and marketed in 1971/01. Previous A2 MkII design was the base model of the car and the same platform has been used.

The demand for the A2 series (MkI and MkII) forced Otosan to continue A2 production by upgrading the interior of the car and accessories. However, A2 SL was the final version of A2.

The 5-seat body is built from fibre glass and affixed to an H-frame chassis. The chassis has independent front suspension utilising coil springs and leaf springs on a live axle for the rear. Servo added brake system is mono hyrolic with disc in the front and drum in the rear. Hand brake, replaced at the left of one piece front seat, is mechanical and brake lever connected by a cable to another lever at rear axle. Cluch system is cable. Gear box with cast iron block, is Ford type 2 model with manual transmission. Steering system is rack and pinion. A2 SL is powered by 54 HP (5500 rpm) 1298cc Ford Kent Crossflow OHV with cast iron block engine. Monoblock front seat has been kept. All other technical equipments were the same with the A2 MkII type. The rim cover has been changed. However, improvement on the interior design and quality of the materials used were remarkable. Even though on the dashboard there were the same Smiths gauges (on the left a speedometer and on the right another gauge with water temperature and fuel indicators), the style and the material of the dashboard has been renewed.  SL has kept its rectangular shape headlamps and signals at the out-sides of the headlamps. At rear, the new signal and stop lights were red and had a rectangular shape. The bumpers remained the same but the front grille design were changed.

A2 is also the first “crash test” applied car of Turkey. Even though A2 has been developed as a family car, it has also got a big success in commercial use as “taxi” and "dolmus".
A2 SL has been manufactured between 1976/01-1981/01 and 15.401 cars were produced. Total A2 production was 35.668 units.
